Goodreads Summary:
In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

My Thoughts
This was a nice change of pace for me, it was refreshing and I fell in love with the world. I have been burned out on YA Fantasy lately and this really got me excited to pick it up again. What I enjoyed most was the characters. They were very different from one another and you can really see their distinctive personalities and motives. I love that they are all the antagonists to one another and are morally grey in their own ways.

It was a slower read and I felt it was more character driven than action driven. However, I liked that aspect of it as well. It gave me time to learn about the island and how it works. It gave me time to figure out which queen I am cheering for the most. (*Arsinoe*) However, sometimes portions of the book did drag and I am confused what was going on the one of the relationships. I think I know why but there wasn't any confirmation or reason, at least in this book.

When I did get to the end, I wanted to get my hands on the next book right away but I have to wait until September. One Dark Throne is now on my most anticipated books of 2017 list! I am happy this was my first book with the year, started 2017 off right. If you are into a character driven, slow building fantasy this book is for you.
